The story behind the festival is also interesting. Qu Yuan, a famous statesman and poet, lived in Chu at the time Qin was unifying the Chinese empire. When Chu fell to Qin, Qu Yuan on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 278 BCE committed suicide by drowning himself. Local fishermen jumped into their boats and raced to save him, but they were unable to find him. They then threw rice balls into the water to prevent the fish from devouring his remains.
There are several different versions of the story, but dragon boat races and zong zi are still part of the celebration.

Speaking of 火辣 Chinese ladies, my favorite has to be 巩俐 (Gong Li),
沉鱼落雁, 闭月羞花。The set phase, used to compliment a woman of exceptional beauty, refers to the four classic beauties of ancient China: 西施 (Xi Shi), 王昭君 (Wang Zhaojun), 貂婵 (Diaochan), and 杨贵妃 (Yang Guifei).
It is said that fish upon looking at 西施 would forget to swim and sink.
Birds seeing 昭君 would fall from the sky. 貂婵 would cause the moon to
fad in embarrassment. 贵妃 could make flowers wilt in shame.

May 13, 2013 at 12:52 AMI also find Baidu extremely useful. Their format for many articles is to give a brief definition of the topic and then go into more and more detail. They have a great deal of information concerning many less well known Chinese historical persons and events.
It is good to see that you have returned to Cpod. From some of your earlier posts you indicated that you were studying Chinese classics at Harvard. Have you finished your studies? What was the topic of your dissertation or thesis?
