July 4, 2013 at 11:34 AMYeah, its a big country, but most people live in the cities. I don't know what more people in authority could do to ease the problem of 人太多, besides having amazing infrastructure, public transport, and the one child policy. Besides that, Chinese people are generally very good with crowds, not like London where there's constant bickering between people in public places.

July 3, 2013 at 6:15 AMRegarding the use of 好姐妹, not sure if this was covered in the lesson but this is only for girls to use with each other, right? I just called my female friend my 好姐妹 and she responded with a 'sweating' emoticon.
And what about that sweating emoticon, anyway? Does it signify embarassment? That's what it seemed to mean in the Japanese cartoons I used to watch...

June 27, 2013 at 9:35 AMI have a question about 比:
I heard that it implies something is more or greater than something else, so it's incorrect to say:
她比我小
Is that true?

June 26, 2013 at 12:12 AMHow appropriate is it, generally, for people to ask to 涨工资 here? Is is OK in other types of jobs, or are you likely to get 辞掉 -ed?

June 26, 2013 at 12:09 AMGood idea, and I'd be interested in taking such a course, but don't you have a Chinese friend/colleague to help you with that stuff? I wouldn't dream of trying to deal with the nitty gritty of routers and modems etc. by myself. I don't even understand that stuff in English!

June 26, 2013 at 12:05 AMYou might be thinking 'subjective/objective' is a grammatical term, but its not. To illustrate, an objective statement: "The sky is blue." And a subjective one: "The sky is beautiful." Objective statements are not matters of opinion, so people often tell themselves/each other to 'be more objective'.
I think in this case the lady uses objective-sounding language to justify her firing of the ayi - It's not her opinion that she's lazy and a poor worker, it's an objective, empirical fact!
