I am at a similar stage as you and can share some of your feelings.
The intermediate lessons I can do directly listening the podcast, without the text, and I can follow. This is not the case for upper intermediate, where I have no chance without the script.
What works quite well for me is to download the pdf and read through it before I first listen to the lesson. I try to get a grip on the key vocab, then listen to the podcast. What I find is that once I have a critical mass of vocabulary for the lesson, speed is not so much a problem any more.
