July 15, 2007 at 12:15 PMIn ancient Egypt cats were considered gods, so I have a way to remember the tones for mao1-cat, mao2-fur/hair and mao4-hat. Hair floats up, light as a feather on the breeze (tone 2). You look up and see a supreme cat-god high in the sky (tone 1). You doff your hat in respect (tone 4).
