In ancient Egypt cats were considered gods, so I have a way to remember the tones for mao1-cat, mao2-fur/hair and mao4-hat. Hair floats up, light as a feather on the breeze (tone 2). You look up and see a supreme cat-god high in the sky (tone 1). You doff your hat in respect (tone 4).

I'll remember "wu(2) liao(2) = boring" by thinking of Owl in the Winnie The Pooh stories. He's boring, vague and woolly. He's a "WOOLLY OWl".
