June 22, 2011 at 6:32 PMTo GregE, that's a good point, because U.S. football announcers can say "that was a beautiful drive" and they don't really mean so much that it had beauty but that it was impressive! Of course, impressive has connotations of the sublime, and when the Romantic Age was blooming in art many critics & writers wrote about the distinction between the beautiful and the sublime. Classic art was considered beautiful, romantic sublime. Sometimes people could get quite worked up about the differences and which was supposedly better. But if you don't get too absolutist about things, a wonderful Chinese trait by the way, then there's no reason the sublime, i.e the impressive, and the beautiful can't be blended together sometimes and a word like piàoliang is there to describe it

June 23, 2011 at 4:50 PMA question about the 8th sentence in the expansion. Is 'kànjiàn' a líhécí and consequently can not take 'wǒ' as an extra object?
