老公 (lao3gong1) and 老婆 (lao3po2) are informal or familiar terms for husband and wife, respectively. They occur frequently in the more advanced Cpod lessons.

What's more common for husband? I hear 丈夫(zhang4fu5) more often.

jiajie,

Pickup basketball means simply hanging out at the basketball courts and joining a game there. It can be one-on-one , two-on-two,..., five-on-five。It can be half court or full court.

Jenny, thanks for your defintions. What about "zone defense?"

What about these expressions in Mandarin:

Dribble, free throw, jump shot, pick and roll, slam dunk, time out, charging foul, technical foul.

One might also clarify that "hog" is a synonym for 猪。 Bill

Thanks for another one of those jewels of the Chinese language. This reminds me of when I would return home from "work" really wiped out. My wife would say, 你很累!And I'd smile and say, "It's a labor of love." 我很辛苦 would've been just right. Bill

Connie, What's the difference between 刚刚好 and 正好? Bill

As I listen to each 请问 lesson, I sense 越来越 spontaneity of expressions. Things as simple as 喜欢就买嘛 and 生活嘛 are so useful for introducing us to what I would call "Chinese street talk" or how people really converse with one another. It's one of the keys to really speaking any language, isn't it! Bill
