I take it that 画 in 你画的不像小鸟 is the verb "to paint" as opposed to the noun "painting", 对吗？Could you then use the same pattern with other verbs？ e.g. what you wrote....你写的 ; or what I saw....我看的。。。。
How would you say: What you are painting.... what I am seeing...., etc?

April 20, 2010 at 5:55 AMI am really looking forward to this series - I think it is a great idea to be exposed to the different dialects and even if you don't live in Shanghai, I see it as part of gaining a richer experience of the Chinese language and culture as a whole. Great idea, CPod! As I am currently living in Shanghai, having some Shanghainese vocab is going to be very helpful, and into the future, as CPod explores Cantonese and other dialects, it will be great to have some extra knowedge of the local lingo when travelling into other parts of China.

March 2, 2010 at 4:28 AM我走了 (wǒ zǒu le) - I'm trying to differentiate/distinguish between I'm about to go (something about to happen 了) and I've already left (completed action 了).
I've listened to some of the older Qing Wen lessons on the use of 了 - basically it seems to boil down to the position of the speaker (in this case 我) in relation to the other person, i.e. If 我 is still here, then it is about to happen and if 我 is not here anymore, then it's already happened!
And to give it more context you can add some time words. e.g. 他已经走了 (tā yǐjīng zǒu le) if it is about to happen, and 他马上走了(tā mǎshàng zǒu le) if it has already happened. Am I on the right track?

February 25, 2010 at 2:58 AMIs 保安 (bǎo‘ān) just the job description for the security guard, or can you use it to greet him too, as in 保安，你好。 Or is it better to use 先生？
Along the same lines, what "title" should one use for a lady taxi driver - is shīfu 师傅 only for male taxi drivers/craftsmen?
