March 15, 2009 at 10:26 AMIn Chongqing, you always take off your shoes. Slippers are provided for visitors. No exceptions unless the home owner has plastic covers for you to put over your shoes.

July 16, 2009 at 5:27 AMI am living with my Chinese wife in Chongqing, and trying to learn Putonghua. Theoretically, and ideal language exchange partner. In reality, my wife is so intent upon learning English that she will seldom communicate in Chinese. I will talk to her in Chinese and she will reply in English. Another problem is that her Putonghua has a typical Chongqing accent so often my pronunciation is better than hers. She says foreigners who are fluent in Putonghua (not me) usually speak better Putonghua than the average Chongqingren, however, the younger generation here are speaking good Putonghua.
