Hey,

thanks for your reply. Do you have a grammar reference or some other explanation as to why one can say 我学中文一年了? The only thing I could come up with is that "我学中文" would be something like the topic in a topic-comment-structure and one would use "一年了" as a description of some kind.

Hi,

why is it that people say "你失业多久了?" or "你来中国多久了?"?

According to the rules the "多久" should be placed between the verb and the object (or the verb would be repeated) as in

我学了一年 (的) 中文, or did I get something wrong? 

Are the above examples exceptions to the rule or just colloquial language? Thanks for clearing that up, Michael.
