In English, it would be very rude to say, "Waiter / Waitress, give me a fork...etc." We would almost always start our sentence with "Please..." or "May I have..." or "Could you please give me...?" In Chinese, it is not rude to say (quite directly) "Give me a fork." I think this difference causes native English speakers to overdo with the 请 (qing) / please. Understanding this difference is important, I believe. Anyone want to weigh in?

January 23, 2012 at 5:15 PMI have a question using 离 with 近。Other than "just sounding right," is there any reason why 近 always comes with 很 but 远 doesn't necessarily need it (but can have it if the distance is very far)? Conversely, what happens if the locations are not very near but are kind of near? 谢谢，还有龙年快乐！
