July 5, 2009 at 7:06 AMIsn't 灵璧 one of the "seven famous places" where collectable stones come from: in this case lingbi stones? A few months ago, I saw a documentary or something about people paying fortunes for stones in weird shapes which caught my interest :-)

July 4, 2009 at 8:06 PMInterestingly the French word for "hate" (noun) is la haine, quite similar to 恨 hèn, maybe some words / expressions are universal?
I try to look for connections between different languages (so it is easier to remember things), so if anyone else knows examples I love to hear them :-)

July 3, 2009 at 5:50 AMTo be honest, the Pinyin chart is quite useful. But, for a non-native English / Dutch speaker like me, this show has no real added value.
Actually the Dutch pronounciation is quite close to Pinyin. I can imagine the same goes for (partially) for French, German or Scandinavian languages.
Also different languages have different problem syllables :-) I remember vaguely a DA show on different Chinese accents....

June 22, 2009 at 10:18 AMAbout 2 months ago there was a kidnapping of a child and a robbery next / at my compound in Nanjing. For the first case a large sum of money was requested in exchange for the child. For the second, a large sum of money was taken from the owners home. I was a bit surprised by the amounts of cash involved in both situations and for the Chinese around me it seemed completely normal to have these large sums of money at home. (btw. the kidnappers were "caught" after the money was handed over and killed (shot) immediately by the police.)
Both cases made quite an impression on me and when I discussed this with my chinese teacher she told me that many (older) Chinese still do not put their money on a bank account and many people prefer to keep large sums of cash at home and pay with cash. Some people do not even have a bank account?! I wonder if this is true?
Recently there have been quite a few security incidents at ATM's and I was advised to be a bit more carefull when withdrawing money or go to the bank (Note: I feel safer in China then in Europe and think these are incidents).

June 21, 2009 at 10:36 AMWhat I find interesting is that many Chinese around me call me 玛小姐, (my Chinese name is 玛秋琳). In Europe you would not address a married 30 year old as such. Is this normal?

July 7, 2009 at 7:47 AMNever order Swiss fondue, made with French cheese in an Italian restaurant in China (beijing). Nothing good will come out of it :-).
In Nanjing there is a nice French restaurant which serves authentic French food (i.e. coliflower soup, foie gras, quiche Lorraine etc). The name is Les 5 Sens 乐尚法国餐厅, the address: 汉口路52号-1(靠近陶谷新村), the number: 025-8359-5859 and the chef speaks French. The price of the food is very very reasonable!
