Hi pete

That's an unamusing joke if you see how workers wash dishes at a local restaurant here in China!

"装蒜"的由来挺有意思,看起来中国虚报现象已经有悠久的历史!

Hi ivor88

A seasoned swindler doesn't let you realize that you've been deceived. Here is a good discussion about Chinese tea scams in a Chinesepod forum. Please be alert.

Hi xiaophil

当做/当作 (dang4zuo4) means "consider/regard~as", but not "make, become".

Hi Jenny

Hi lotsofwordsandnospaces

It takes "a long time" to type your ID name, hehe!

Contrary to what you feel, 第三者 sounds more humorous to me than 情妇. "Mistress" is certainly "a third party" or "outsider" from the standpoint of a wife/husband. You can use 第三者 for both a man and a woman, but 二奶 is only for a woman. A little surprisingly, both 第三者 and 二奶 are already listed in 现代汉语词典 (2005), but there is no 二奶 in the 1998 edition.

Hi lotsofwordsandnospaces and tal

爱人 indicates both wife and husband (and sometimes even indicates your sweetheart) in the PRC, while it means "mistress/concubine" in Taiwan and Japan, as you said above. There is the song titled "爱人" sung by Teresa Teng (邓丽君), and the image of this song people hold in the PRC must be very different from that in Taiwan. There are several Chinese words for "mistress" used in the PRC, such as 情人,情妇,情夫,第三者,and 二奶.

Hi kimiik

There is the term "批斗大会" frequently used during so-called "Cultural Revolution" (1966-1977) in the PRC, which should be a Chinese counterpart of "Stalinist Trial". The PRC also has a tradition of political "forced confession" called "自我批评" (self-criticism). Two peas in a pot think alike.

Hi aprilwhite

"以为" also means "regard, suppose", but in reality native speakers usually use the word to mean "(mistakenly) recognize", like "我以为你已经回美国去了,没想到你还在中国!".

I remember, a native Chinese, who teaches Chinese to foreign people, even insisted here in Chinesepod forums before that 以为 only means "(mistakenly) recognize" in Chinese.

Interestingly enough, 现代汉语词典, a sort of bible of modern Mandarin, only shows "认为 (regard, suppose)" as a definition of 以为. There are no perfect dictionaries, of course.
