"You" is already plural. In the middle ages, there was a second person singualr that used noun cases like a lot of european languages at the time. It's the old "thee, thou, thine, etc.." thing. However, the King was called you, i.e. the "royal we". Eventually everyone wanted to be like the king, and you replaced the singular and the singular became an insult. I'm sorry, you're just simply not good enough to be more than one person. Interesting :)

October 26, 2011 at 3:48 AMIn some places i heard 小姐 is "prostitute", or so my friends from Chengdu tell me. But i have heard lots of older men use 小姐 for the waitress - this time in 深圳。 Someone once called my wife 小姐 and I wasn't sure what to do, but she was only 20 years old at the time, so I think the meaning is quite regional. Hence i just always use 服务员 for the waitress, except in 四川, where i was told 小妹儿 （said xiao mar) was proper.
