@shenyajin: You rock! Thanks so much. These constructions are so hard to put together for me because it's so culturally dependent, meaning that even if the translation is correct I find myself searching to figure out if sympathy / empathy are even expressed like this when it comes to health matters. Good to know I can now put this on my cheat sheet :) Thanks again :)

Fantastic lesson...very helpful for anyone hearing a sad story which brings me to the question: 

If someone tells you a sad story, how can you say：

* "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that...that must have been really difficult for you" ... would it be something like "听到这件事，应该很。。。"(no idea, nothing sounds right to me, not 难过， 难受， or anything else; the sentence doesn't even sound right to me)

--> Or would you say you wouldn't really use the second sentence, as in you wouldn't express empathy this way in Mandarin?

Great episode! Judge was definitely a Chinese version of Simon Calwell (sp?)...

quick question regarding the pattern (if I can call it a pattern):

...的事， ...过了吗。

(context: needed to ask a young pregnant girl this during an interview and I didn't know how to ask it):

e.g. "你对这个怀孕的事， 跟你的男朋友已经(说好/说过)了吗？

by the way, anyone know how to say "partner"， as in if you don't want to be presumptious and assume that the person is married or is in a relationship with a boyfriend, and you want to ask, "have you talked about this with your partner"? Or would it be okay in mandarin to use 男朋友？

Hi Everyone, wonderful lessons! Can't get enough of these Qingwen lessons. Have a quick translation question:

"If you continue like this, you'll feel more and more short of breath"

"如果你继续这样下去，你就会越来越呼吸急促"

Thanks in advance for your help　。。。　(would this be "谢谢你的帮助" - no idea how to say "in advance")

When counselling patients, would the below translations be correct:

* You should eat less fatty foods

应该吃少一点脂肪含量的食物

* You need to exercise more and watch your diet

你需要多锻炼身体和对饮食很挑剔
