Related subject, can someone give me the Pinyin (my reading of Hanzi is not good enough yet!) for "Are you on the Pill?". Thanks, Chris

Not a particularly language related query, but can any of the Shanghai long-termers let me know when the summer heat & humidity eventually subside! This is my first summer here and I must admit it's more than I can take (don't know what I'd do if my flat and office weren't air-conditioned!). I'm hoping by mid-September we're back down to more sensible temperatures! Thanks.

Jenny, Ken, FANTASTIC chemistry in the lesson today. I had great fun listening and learning. And I agree with Jenny, the people-traffic officers are very very emotionally invested in their job here in Shanghai!

In the 5th section of the Expansion, is it possible to drop the 儿 from the end of the sentences? I think I'm right in saying that this sound is only used in the North of the country?

Hi, I've just listened to this podcast and had the exact same question as Corey did in the third post up from this one. Please could one of the CP team answer it. I was waiting for Ken or Jenny to explain in the podcast, but they just ignored it. Many thanks! chris

Is "nar3" the same as "na3li"?

For the people asking about gyms in Shanghai; all the ex-pat apartment complexes around town have pretty decent gyms and swimming pools built into the complex as standard. The membership fees compare very favourably with the West (well, London at least). You can often negotiate with your landlord/letting agent to get them to throw the membership fee in with the rent. I visited at least 6 apartment complexes before settling, and they all had good gyms/pools. Hope this helps.

Lantian, Juriann, Doesn't Ken say in the podcast that the "xie" is used to indicate the plural more generally. I implied from that comment that "ge" would be for the singular. So in English, it would be the different between "that" and "those", if that makes sense? I may be completely wrong, but that's what I took away from the podcast. Chris

Thanks Jenny, I see what you mean. I was starting to doubt that I'd learnt my pinyin pronunciations correctly there! I'm actually sat in my office at the moment and asked one of the locals to listen - he confirmed that he understood it perfectly, but mentioned that the "ing" sound would be more pronounced up north. I've still got a long way to go with the listening part of the learning! Chris

In the audio in the Expansion, I'm struggling with the young lady's pronunciation of English (yingyu) in the sentence "Chinese is harder than English". She doesn't seem to be saying the "ing" sound in "yingyu" - it's more like a "yao" sound. Am I missing something, or is it just the speed at which she is speaking? Thanks Chris
