March 30, 2011 at 7:03 AM厉害 can have either a good or a bad meaning depending on the context. 我们的老板真厉害 - could mean that your boss is kind of harsh or strict and a little scary. Or 厉害 can also mean really impressive (like in the dialogue). Let's say you watch a guy walk on a tightrope across a huge waterfall - you could say "哇,真厉害". Because that was pretty hardcore. English has this as well - in the 90s a lot of people would say something was "bad", which actually meant it was really good. Languages are funny. :D

March 30, 2011 at 12:02 AMI think that would work, except 个 is the wrong measure word. It should be 一张新卡. I *think* having a 的 between the 新 and the 卡 is optional (could be wrong) because you don't need it other places (新车).

March 29, 2011 at 10:13 AMWell, I'm not sure English has an idiom that would be a better replacement. Although I was looking and I personally like "bit the dust". It's a little earthier than "kick the bucket". 哈哈。

March 28, 2011 at 3:28 PMYep, I saw his response - and it's useful!...but ”请帮我换一张卡“ only says that I want to exchange my card. I also want to explain why I want to change my card (it stopped working), but I'm not sure that 坏 is the best word.

March 28, 2011 at 8:03 AM谢谢! Is there a better word than 坏了? Broken seems so extreme. I think if all you did was wipe the info from the magnetic tape, all they have to do is reset the card to get it to work again.

March 28, 2011 at 6:22 AMSometimes "low end" is just better. In Hong Kong abalone is expensive and classy...but I think it tastes like rubber. I'd rather eat at a busy hole-in-the-wall place than a fancy restaurant any day.

March 28, 2011 at 3:09 AMHow would you say - "My room card has stopped working. Can I get a new one?"
kěyǐ shuō ma? "wǒ de fángkǎ huàile, qǐng gěi wǒ xīn de."
可以说吗?“我的房卡坏了,请给我新的。”

March 30, 2011 at 3:28 PMI also agree! Good acting, fun new story. I think this may be my new favorite lesson. I'm glad I moved up to UI. :D
