The pronunciation of 圣 as shen instead of sheng is pretty apparent in this dialogue. I’m told this is a southern thing. How universal is this in, say, Shanghai?

Does your friend also have an opinion on whether ma3jia2 is the common way of pronouncing it?

As you say, ma2jia3 is what I would expect to hear according to tone sandhi, but not what I'm hearing. I'm hearing ma3jia2.

No matter how many times I listen to 马甲, I hear ma3jia2, even though the vocab entry gives it two 3rd tone marks. Is this one of those cases where the dictionary tones don't match the actual pronunciation?
