November 22, 2009 at 1:45 AMHi Jason,
Regarding 块, please consider using kuai, yuan, or even dollar. When ever I hear bucks, my brain always calls up US$, and the experience is quite incongruent. I understand that it’s colloquial, but I'd rather hear the formal version (RMB) of the same object than an informal version of a different object (US$).

January 29, 2010 at 2:20 PMIn regards to context, there is a lot more context in live speech. If you consider how much harder it is to have a discussion face-to-face, vs on the phone, vs across email -- as more and more context disappears the conversation becomes more difficult. When a guy is shaking his fist at me, I don't even need to hear the words to know what he is saying.
Is the speed and facility of hanzi/kanji vs phonetic/kana script not testable in Japan?
