December 11, 2014 at 6:14 PMI have two questions about the expansion material: 1) in the case of “我八月要去北京” vs “ 你七月要去哪里” I'm confused about the difference between the use of 要去 in both sentences. In the first sentence 要去 appears to mean "going to," whereas in the second sentence 要去 appears to mean "want to go". Is there some sort of grammatical rule that I'm not aware of here? Can someone please explain this? 2) The sentence “ 我来了一个月“ is translated as " I've been here for one month." Why is “来了” translated as " have been" instead of “是了“？ the 了 here seems to indicate a completed action, so to me “来了“ would mean "came" or "arrived" making a sentence that means "I got here one month ago," whereas to complete "being" is to "have been," so why isn't the sentence written “我是了一个月“？

December 4, 2014 at 7:19 AMI've noticed that 哪里 can come before or after a verb: “你住在哪里?” vs. "你在哪里工作？" What's the deal here? I feel like there's probably a grammar rule here that I'm just simply missing.

[I just graduated from the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine, and I want to go to China and study with famous doctors. I learned how to read classical Chinese medical literature, but we had no time to learn to speak Chinese. I also study qigong and would love to go to the mountains to study.]
well, I hope that's what I said. I learned to read really old stuff, but never learned to write or speak so now I'm doing it on my own!

September 25, 2015 at 6:51 AMI noticed in the last sentence the speaker uses 一些 (yixie) to say "some." Can someone talk about any differences and similarities between the use of 一些 and 有的 (youde).
