Posted on: Surviving Winter and Singles Scene for Expat Girls
December 14, 2008 at 11:33 AMBrendaninaus hits the nail on the head. Its a very sensitive topic because to be objective it is easy to lend indirect support to racial stereotyping. I have seen this from both sides - I used to date an Asian girl but am currently dating a Black girl. Just as its rarer to see an Asian man/white girl couple than the other way round so it is rarer to see a White man/Black girl couple than a Black man with a White girl. Just as Brendan says, to me its to do with perceptions of masculinity and feminimity, those qualities in different races/cultures, and the power play that derives from it. The height issue falls under this. I notice that when I meet other expats now (male or female) there is an undercurrent of a greater degree of respect when they see me with my current girlfriend than when I was dating an Asian one. I feel this is because it is seen as being that I have taken the more difficult option and therefore "more successful". From a broader statistical perpective this is true, it is a rarer situation - but when generalised and applied to individual cases it is clearly ridiculous and can be very hurtful.
