Oh, when I said "in the US" I should probably have specified "by practitioners, particularly of Chinese martial arts, in the US" where Wushu is also something quite specific (the modern Chinese government-created form) in addition to a general word for martial gongfu. I don't think people into Chinese martial arts in the US would ever use Wushu for any of the traditional arts, like various Shaolin forms or taijiquan or baguazhang.

Is武术 (wǔshù) really how people in China refer to martial arts generally? Here in the US, from what I know, we only use武术 to refer to the specific modern, sanitized, Communist Party-friendly performance-oriented compulsory forms designed and sanctioned by some official body. I don't generally hear people say武术 to refer to traditional Chinese martial arts.
