Wondering why the Shanghainese 'pin yin' (or whatever you call the phonetic pronunciation guide) seems clipped to only one letter per syllable... like 'h' for the huh/hao for good... or 'in' for jin, especially when you can hear a distinct j sound, or 't' for the tuh for to. Doesn't seem to be an accurate enough phonetic transliteration.

June 30, 2008 at 5:44 PMI was asked by a friend if I saw many 美女 when I was in Suzhou... I told her I couldn't really remember... She replied with the chengyu, "画多眼乱"... Meaning, I probably saw so many that my mind couldn't take them all in.
In reality, it was in Shanghai where I saw the most beautiful women... Probably Connie and Jenny among them... You too Amber... Even though you are not Chinese!!! ;)
BTW - Are those the right characters for that chengyu?

Maybe pre-marital sex is not common; however, I am told that extra-marital relationships are becoming popular again with men of means having a few 小老婆 set up in their own apartments outside of the marital abode. 是不是?
You would think that Chinese women would realize that with the 4:1 male to female ratio that they could pretty much write their own ticket and not have to settle for being less than anybody's one and only.

June 9, 2008 at 6:04 PMRecently, a Chinese speaking friend of mine lost his wife... I looked up something supportive to say and came up with 吊慰给您... He readily understood, and thanked me, but I am not sure if it was proper, or if there may be a more conventional way of expressing condolences.

June 4, 2008 at 5:34 PMNot sure how old this lesson is... however, I just wanted to comment on the pronuciation of 日本/rì běn/Japan. Whenever I pronounce the word 日 with the buzzy between the teeth 'r' sound for 日/rì, most of the Chinese speakers that I know just look at me as if they don't understand, then I must repeat myself using the 'lù' pronunciation for 日as it sounds like it is being said by southern Chinese, and then they get it...

Says it makes them feel like peasants, but then they admit they prefer to see foreign guys of the Caucasian persuasion to have nice tans... Not good for me when they see my pale-white and freckled complexion. Maybe someone might like to start a discussion regarding the derogatory term 小白脸
