我是国际关系的学生。两年前，我在香港的学生。[I am an international relations student. Two years ago I was a student in Hong Kong]
While I was in Hong Kong I became interested in East Asian international relations and politics. During this time I also visited the mainland a number of times and started learning the language. (I could've learnt Cantonese but that is much harder and would be less useful when i left Hong Kong).
现在我住在荷兰，我学习亚洲的政治和经济学。[Now I am living in Holland, and I am studying Asian politics and economics.]
Most of my courses are focused on China's international relations and my thesis will be on the impact of China's economic transformation on gender equality. The more I study the more interested in the country I become and the more I want to learn the language in order to really understand the culture. Plus being able to speak Chinese would be fantastic for pursuing a career in international relations.
明年我在伦敦工作。但是以后我想在台湾学习中文。 [Next year I have to work in London. But after I would like to study chinese in Taiwan.]
I'd happily go to either Taiwan or mainland China 但我的男朋友想住在台北。[But my boyfriend wants to live in Taipei] Which means at some point i'll have to make the switch to traditional characters!
Finally, one thing I love about learning Chinese is that Chinese people always tell you how good you are. Even if you are terrible and their english (which they'll say is terrible) is way better. Very very different to my experience of using french in France！
