Being Asian is one of the things that I’m most proud of. I just love the sights, sounds and taste of the culture here. As an artist, I think I fell in love with the beautiful fluidity of Chinese paintings and calligraphy first; and then the “calling” to learn the language naturally followed. Plus, we have waaay too many Chinese channels on TV which I have watched for so long even without comprehending. So, like most of us here, I guess you could say that I’m studying Chinese simply because it is something that makes me happy (albeit in a geeky sort of way).

My family thinks I’m weird and that I’m torturing myself in learning a new language with such a complicated system of writing. They have this assumption that since we were brought up using English, we should be dreaming of going to the US or some European city, and not China. I’m totally ignoring them regarding this matter.
