October 8, 2007 at 3:00 PM"Love the vocab too. I work in an Australian operating suite and whenerv I get the chance I ask the Chinese docs what "nephrectomy" or whatever is in Mandarin." Gives me the idea: How about some lessons with medical vocabulary? I'm at med school, maybe I have the chance to work in China some time in the future. That would be of great help. Also other people visiting or living in China should have use for such vocabulary.

October 3, 2007 at 8:23 PMBTW, folks, while doing an *ahem* Google search, I found the perfect example of the new 人造 Chinese woman, her name is 陈瑀涵 (Chen Yuhan) and seemingly she was Miss Taiwan last year. If you take a look she clearly has a 隆胸 (unnatural breast size for a slim Chinese woman) and 割双眼皮 (her eyes look unnaturally wide open), about her nose I'm not sure. http://images.china.cn/site1000/20070817/001111016368082f51831f.jpg

Many Asians have an eyefold that covers parts of their eyes permanently, I think the technical term for it is "epicanthic fold" or "epicanthal fold". "I think the advanced lessons should give you some normal, fluent Mandarin conversations, so you can understand ordinary conversations of Chinese people speaking at an ordinary native speaker speed and level. In most of the advanced lessons there are too many four-letter chengyus for my taste. I spend about 70 percent of the vocab learning time of each advanced lesson trying to memorize the new vocabularies on the chengyu, which I will never use in any conversation anyway. Case in point: The newest lesson on food: Of 19 new vocabularies introduced around 11 are multiple character compound words. How about introducing 30-40 two letter words of practical importance instead? Is any adult learner of Mandarin as a second language going to use expressions like "得心应手" "山珍海味" etc. in his conversations with Chinese people? E.g. I don't even know the Mandarin words for the various types of fish you can order in a Chinese restaurant, something of practical importance, like what is "silver carp" and what is "pomfret" etc. How about having such stuff in a lesson on food, instead of four letter chengyus you probably forget right after you have done the lesson."
