January 26, 2014 at 4:22 AMHi zaphekiah, I am glad that our comments and questions have helped you although recently, ChinesePod has not been answering our questions. I understand if the lessons are from a few years back but it seems that they do not do it with new lessons either. This is sad because when I posted my transcription in a website a few months back, I got over 400 pages IP addresses of hits (according to Weebly) so I know that many poddies are interested in some sort of "study group". I do not know what ChinesePod is up to but 我不要对牛弹琴 so future postings will not be coming! Also, we will be moving to Texas in March and my husband thinks I should work on my Spanish because Texas is presumably more Hispanic than Florida. My involvement with Chinese is going to slow down considerably until we will have settled down. Meanwhile, I will sit back and observe ChinesePod. Good luck with your Chinese!

January 21, 2014 at 8:40 AMSome of my sources are more accurate than others and it seems from my observation that the new crew are bilingual. It also appears that John's company can use the Chinese Pod materials (I read this from his website but I could be wrong if I read this on an early morning without my morning caffeine yet). We will never get to know everything but I am glad Jenny is still around.

February 4, 2014 at 12:47 PMI had learned Chinese in a Chinese School as a child in the Philippines (roughly 3 hours per day in the afternoon) before the government decided to limit it to 1 hour. I was in the last graduating class so you can say that I learned Chinese the traditional way which was memorization, no fun and no frills.
I started out with Chinese Pod in the Upper Intermediate level and although we learned to read in Mandarin and Hookien in the Philippines, we used the dialect at home and in society, so my main focus has been on listening comprehension. Then, I found out that the 白话语 which started after the Qing Dynasty I think, has grown especially in the field of international business and technology while I was adjusting to life in the US and of course, vocabulary study is another major task.
There used to be a flashcard at http://www.mandarintools.com/ where I studied and reviewed the 4000 Chinese characters from time to time. I cannot access it now.
China has a big population of young people, and if you include Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, keeping up with the language development is a daunting task. I had a vocabulary question in one Chinese Pod lesson and asked for help from a Taiwanese friend. She in turn asked for help from her husband who goes on business trips to the Mainland regularly and her niece, who constantly uses Baidu. Even our former school principal from Taiwan could not help her daughter in her translation job in an international company, saying that her Chinese is outmoded! So my attitude is enjoy, have fun, maybe I can do some translation work when I retire!
