October 8, 2008 at 12:12 AMLight, its a shame that you get this "patronising" attitude in restaurants in Chinatown (Sydney). As a Sydneysider myself, I do not think you would find this if you went to a restaurant sayin the CBD itself, say for yum cha at Sky Phoenix. I go there quite often with my office colleagues and note that if you want a fork (for my non chinese friends) , you would have to ask for it.
In terms of the menu, I think there is a presumption in many restaurants that if you are not Chinese, you therefore dont read chinese...so the menu you are given is written in English and potentially fewer dishes to select from. No disrespect but heavens the Chinese just about eat anything under the sun and the restaurants may not voluntarily offer some dishes to non chinese who may find it repulsive the way its cooked to the Chinese style. If you want dishes not in the menu and cooked the chinese way, tell the waiter, but then for many non Chinese would need to overcome the language barrier first.

Would it be acceptable to leave out the 'zai', and instead have it as 'ni kan shenme'? If its a yes, under what circumstance would you use the 'zai'?
