December 3, 2010 at 12:05 PMShouldn't "娶不到" be "qǔbudào", not " qǔbudǎo"? Sorry, I don't mean to be the tone police.
I love: "喜新厌旧" One of my favorite expressions!

December 2, 2010 at 3:07 PMThe tone is wrong in the vocabulary for "success rate." It should be "chénggōnglǜ," not "chēnggōnglǜ." Right?

December 2, 2010 at 2:30 PMI would point out that "我的女朋友有淘汰我" isn't standard Mandarin for another reason. Using "有" as the equivalent of "to have" (as in the auxiliary verb, "to have done something") is used by southerners, because it exists in some southern dialects, but it is not technically correct in Mandarin.

February 26, 2009 at 10:44 PMI wonder if John's statement about "pang4" being an adjective and "shui4" being a verb may not be a little misleading. As John knows, Chinese doesn't have strict borders between adjectives and verbs. In that regard, "pang4" could also mean "to get fat" or "to gain weight."
I enjoyed this lesson. Keep up the good work!

February 21, 2009 at 7:58 PMSome speculate that Mainland China's failure to use fengshui in designing cities contributed to its being so economically behind Hong Kong and Taiwan. Even now, fengshui is more rigidly applied in Shanghai than in, say, Beijing.
