Hey bababardwan, you have it right: the strokes are intended to start on the thick ends and proceed to the thinner ends. Obviously this is just a calligraphy style that we selected for our font, but it makes for a pretty good guide.

The reason that some strokes will recognize in either direction is that the recognizer for the stroke in question is too lenient. If you see a stroke that has a persistent misrecognition problem, drop me a line at george at skritter and Nick and I will fix it up for you.

Regarding the full version for Chinesepod, that's been forced to the proverbial back burner due to our research into the feasibility of an iPhone/iPad app. It's one of our most requested features, so we're trying to determine if it's feasible.

The difference between the Lite version and the full version are, as trevorb mentioned, the spaced repetition, a whole lot of textbook support (we have more than 110 textbooks at present), shared site-wide mnemonics, character decompositions, editable custom definitions, example sentences, pinyin practice, definition practice, and customized progress stats. There are some advanced features as well such as a mode that changes how Skritter recognizes input to give you fewer hints, the ability to increase the recognition strictness, and a host of customizable options relating to the display. I'm probably leaving off features, but that's the main gist.

Hey guys, we're happy to see such enthusiasm for Skritter! Thinkbuddha, thanks for fielding so many questions about us while we slept.

We've got a lot of new features on the way that should make Skritter even more useful. Namely, Nick is working hard right now on developing pinyin and definition practice so that everyone will be able to use active recall in cementing not only tone and character, but also the pinyin and definition. We also just released our Japanese version.

As thinkbuddha can probably attest, we really do welcome any and all comments you guys might have for improving the site and making it easier to use, so if you come across something you'd like to see changed or you think of a cool feature, drop us a line!
