Can you say this?

你上哪儿上学?

Does it mean where "Where do you go to school?" or "Where will you go to school?"?

I had to look these up:

歧视 qíshì to discriminate against; discrimination

深刻 shēnkè profound; deep; deep-going

奸 jiān adultery

妄 wàng absurd; fantastic; presumptuous; rash

婪 lán avaricious

奴 nú slave

嫉 jí jealousy; be jealous of

倾向 qīngxiàng trend; tendency; orientation

性格 xìnggé nature; disposition; temperament; character; personality

主导 zhǔdǎo to lead; to manage

虽然性别歧视在中国某些地方很严重,但我忍不住会想在西方一些发达国家更倾向与一种所谓"男性"的态度和性格,觉得"男性"这种性格才是社会的主导。What's that mean? "Although sexism is serious in countries such as China..." Then I'm lost. What does the rest mean?

The structure in the photo for this lesson doesn't seem big enough to hold what is described in the dialog.  Where is that little pavilion in the photo?

I saw other photos of the real China Pavilion online.  It is much bigger but the same shape.

"你这可是大错特错了。"This sounds really harsh when you translate it into English.  Does it sound that bad in Chinese?

Also, can 好处 be either hǎochu or hǎochù? I see and hear it differently throughout the lesson and vocabulary list.

This lesson seems more challenging than most intermediate lessons. But I'm learning a lot of words I have come across in reading more than in conversation, such as 与 and 包含. Do people really use these words in conversation or does it sound formal?

星座和十二生肖配合吗?Are the western and Chinese zodiac systems compatible? If both systems determine personality characteristics and tell you whom you'll get along with best, wouldn't there be contradictions between the two systems?  Anyway, if you believe in both systems I would think that would seriously limit your chances of finding a suitable lover/spouse.如果你两个系统都相信,是不是很难找到男女朋友?

我属鸡,是处女座的。那我的性格应该怎么样?我应该找什么样的男朋友?I'm a virgo chicken. So what would my personality be like? And what sign of boyfriend should I look for?

Can someone more who is familiar with both systems comment?

I noticed that the guy in the dialog didn't have to wait in line at all.  Which China Post was that?!

After a friend of mine visited me in China he got detained for a hours in an airport in Hawaii while customs officials tested a few loose tea leaves that fell out of a package of green tea inside his luggage. My friend had long hair at the time and looked sort of like a hippy.  I think they suspected it was pot.

Now-a-days they're strict about not bringing plant and animal products into the US from China.  Is it permissible to bring back tea or other food items either by post or when traveling by air? Maybe someone who has traveled recently can comment.

Jenny Zhu,

你有时候开始说中文,但是突然换到英文。这次你把我们听不懂的单词用中文和英文两种语言说。我觉得这样比较好。

I want to comment about something you sometimes do, which is start a sentence in Chinese but then put the key word in English instead of Chinese, perhaps because it is a word you think we might not know. But this time you gave us both Chinese and English. You told John "其实是你的观察guānchá,你的observation."  I think giving us both is better, because when you just switch to English I do understand but I often wonder, "How do you say that word in Chinese? I want to know." So thanks and please keep doing that.

中国医生验血的时候找什么?照片上的计 jì(or should I say 机器 jīqì?)是有糖尿病tángniàobīng的人用量血里的糖的。

Where I come from doctors don't test blood for a cough like this guy had. What do the Chinese doctors look for when they test the blood? The lesson's photo shows the kind of machine that people with diabetes use to measure their blood sugar level.

Would someone correct my Chinese sentences if I wrote them wrong? 麻烦你修改我的中文。谢谢。

Wow, this is a challenging lesson.

这个小区生活设施齐备非常方便。 "The living facilities in this residential area are all completed.  They're very convenient."

In this sentence in the expansion section the voice says 齐备qíbèi for completed but the mouse over on the word says Jì Bèi. Is this just a mistake or are there two pronunciations?

frankqiu:

时尚界人士shi2shang4jie4ren2shi4 Is that a person from the world of fashion?

Chpod: The last sentence of the translation is missing from the dialog. "Shanghai women are known all over the country for their taste."

Chinesepod:

Useful lesson.  Any chance you could find a real kid for the dialogs with kid's parts?
