January 31, 2013 at 7:15 PMJenny: Hi Chinesepod intermediate listeners! 今天我们要吃火锅,我是Jenny,
John: 你好我是John
Jenny: 嗯,那火锅 John 喜欢吃吗?
John: Yeah of course i like hotpot! Hotpot is one of those quintessential winter foods here in china right?
Jenny: 没错,诶那你有没有吃过一种叫·鸳鸯锅·,·鸳鸯锅·
John: Ah, so that’s that kinda hot pot where that pot is split down the middle and there’s the spicy side and the non-spicy side
Jenny: 没错, 那等一下那我们就一起要去吃鸳鸯锅
John: Ok so before we get started the tones for 火锅
Jenny: 火:是第三声, 火锅,锅:第一声
John: ok, 3, 1, 火锅
Jenny: 对
John: Alright let’s do the dialogue!
DIALOGUE
Posted on: Hot Pot Chitchat
January 31, 2013 at 8:38 PMJohn: Alright so Jenny, the beginning of any Hotpot meal is waiting for the liquid to boil right?
Jenny: 对,我们要等那个汤开,要等那个汤开
John: ok so you are waiting for the broth to boil so the word you use for "boil" is
Jenny: 开,第一声,就是开门的那个开
John: yeh it means to open. So in Chinese when the water opens its boiling
Jenny: 是的,那我们吃火锅的时候要等汤开,那如果你要吃方便面或者(陶岔)都要等水开
John: ok so you wait for the water to boil, so the very first sentence in our dialogue is what?
Jenny: 这边开了!这边开了!
John: so when they say 这边 they're referring to this side, not just here.
Jenny: 对,因为他们在吃鸳鸯锅,刚刚家人说了鸳鸯锅就是分两边,一边是辣的,一边是不辣的
John: Alright so are two sides, the spicy side and the non-spicy side. So this word 鸳鸯that’s first tone and neutral...
Jenny: 对。那鸳鸯其实是一种我也不知道是鸟还是鸭子
John: 鸭子不是鸟吗
Jenny: 知道是,分人就是在水里的然后他们总是一对儿一对儿就是一个pair
John: alright so it’s a kind of bird, we called them mandarin ducks in English so i suspect they are ducks and they are always in pairs, so this kinda hot pot is the spicy paired with the non-spicy it’s called
Jenny: 鸳鸯锅,鸳鸯锅
John: ok so in this dialogue they are putting in the mutton first right?
Jenny: 对,先放羊肉,先放羊肉吧
John: ok so 先that’s what you do first, first tone, 先。Alright and then what’s going on?
Jenny: 那方下去呢,叫快吃因为羊肉煮老了,就不好吃了,煮老了就不好吃了
John: ok so the idea is don’t leave it in too long and if you leave it in too long then it cooks too long and it’s not good anymore
