August 8, 2009 at 6:52 AMDoes 家(jia) imply that the people are in the same house as you, i.e family that you live with, or can you say "我家有三口人。他们住在英国。我主在香港。" (wo jia you san kou ren. ta men zhu zai ying gou. wo zhu zai xiang geng.)
By the way, have you done a podcast covering wider family members, aunts, uncles, grandparent, etc? I always start forgetting after little sister, etc.

August 5, 2009 at 3:35 PMThe new exercises are certainly a lot easier to use than the old ones. I haven't really used them much before, but it was quite easy now.
I wasn't so keen on the change that means the audio review now covers the supplementary vocab as well as the key words, and the larger number of sentences covered. For me, one of the best things about ChinesePod is that I can listen to it on my ipod while I walk to work and don't have to make time to sit down and work through a textbook. Also it is a lot more entertaining and easy to listen to than most tools available. Having to work through the PDF or expansion exercises in order to do the audio review kind of undermines this. I also liked the old repetition of sentences - when I got the sentence wrong first time, I had the chance to learn from the mistake, rather than just moving onto a new sentence. Just my point of view, I don't know what others think.

Is there any chance of ChinesePod following the example of FrenchPod and introducing "ni3 xiang3 bu4 xiang3 gen1 wo3 chang4 ge1?" I'm hoping to hit the karaoke bars quite hard when I move to Hong Kong, but my Chinese friends assure me that the Teresa Teng songs I got from Serge Melnyk's site definitely are too cheesy. They've pointed me in the direction of Wei Yi and Kiss Goodbye, but I'm finding some of the Chinese a bit tricky. I think songs are a great way of learning a language.
I suppose "leih seung mh seung tuhng ngoh cheung go?" is completely out of the question? :-)

August 12, 2009 at 3:35 PMCan anyone explain what the art scam is? Last time I was in Shanghai, I was stopped by a student who asked me to go and see an exhibition. I went, she showed me some paintings, told me they were for sale and was very polite. Some of the paintings were quite expensive, but there were some nice ones that were pretty cheep as well. I bought a cheep one, but I didn't feel under any real pressure. Is there something more going on than this?
I also got stopped by two very attractive girls who wanted to speak English and suggested going for tea. I suggested Starbucks and they lost interest. Mind you, I know a lot of people who don't like Starbucks...
