January 9, 2009 at 1:23 AMCan someone help me with the pronunciation of the word for "food"? The pinyin word is "cài" and while I know pinyin is not a phonetic transcription of English I for some reason hear a /t/ instead of a /k/ sound at the beginning of "cài" when I listen to Ken and Jenny speak. How is it pronounced phonetically in English? Thanks!

January 4, 2009 at 2:01 PMBeing a complete newbie, I really enjoy these short, practical lessons. Being a coffee addict I found this lesson especially enjoyable. So it's not rude to say "I want coffee" instead of saying "I would like some coffee" in China? The moderators seemed to allude to that in their commentary.

January 2, 2009 at 4:05 PMLike Lantian said, Starbucks is an experience. And many now have wifi which is an added bonus. And I love lattes. When I was in China recently I went to Carrefour and got several boxes of a latte mix made by Maxwell House. It's really good; less sweeter than the American latte mixes. I would much rather sit in my comfortable hotel room drinking a latte than use the run-of-the-mill coffee packets they provide you with in the room. One more thing: I bought some Starbucks China mugs in Hong Kong--they really are cool with reddish mountains on one side, a dragon on the other and a dark red color on the inside. They make great gifts.

January 23, 2009 at 3:35 PMI think I'm the only true newbie on this site! That said, I have a question about the tones of "zhen guai". Ken seems to be saying that "guai" is the fourth tone and Jenny says it is the first tone. To me they both sound like first tones. Can anyone help me? What tone is "guai"?
