”都“ also has the meaning of "已经“, e.g. "都7点钟了” "it's already 7 o'clock". Just one of those contextual things!

30 years ago here in Melbourne you pretty much only heard Cantonese, but now you (over)hear a lot more Mandarin and other dialects, including Shanghainese/Wu. I am fortunate enough to have lived in Hong Kong for a few years and can appreciate the value of knowing the local dialect. These dialect lessons (whether Cantonese, Shanghainese etc.) are of value to anyone studying Chinese, just to appreciate the differences between regions. I am off to Shanghai in about a week's time for work so will give some of this a try with my local colleagues, whom no doubt will laugh their heads off because Shanghainese has really weird, almost "non-Chinese" pronunciation. My opinion only guys!
