May 2, 2007 at 4:02 PMA couple of questions about the following two expansion sentences: 近日，政府对有突出贡献的人进行了奖励。 (Recently, the government has been rewarding people for outstanding contributions.) 首先我们要感谢他为中美文化交流所作的贡献。 (First of all we want to thank him for all the contributions he has made to Chinese-American cultural exchange.) First, both of the English translations use the preposition "for" to connect clauses. Yet, in the two Chinese sentences, both 对 and 为 are used in this function. When use one and not the other? Second, I've noticed that 所 can be used to mean all. When should this be used instead of dou1? Does combining 所 with 作 give it a special meaning?

May 16, 2007 at 3:07 PMGrammar type question: I'm confused with the use of 的 in some of the sentences: 他不会出事的. 他应该在家的。 他说要来的... In the first two, I don't really see what it adds to the sentence (or why it's necessary). In the third, I would have expected a 'le' character. jieshi yi xia, keyi ma?
