Great discussion.

To take off articles of clothing:

脱 - tuō

脱鞋 - tuō xié - to take off shoes

脱衣服 - tuō yīfu - to take off clothes

脱帽子 - tuō máozi - to take off hat

奥运会纪录 - Aòyùnhuì jìlù - Olympic record

What does he say when Liu Xiang crosses the finish line??? Shouldn't it be

Liu Xiang 赢了! (Liu Xiang yíng le! - Liu Xiang wins!)

Sounds like "Liu Xiang zhong4 le!"

Hey Scarlett, welcome to C-Pod! Great that you came back to 上海, you have a pretty unique background. What does the Community Advocate do? I didn't quite get it from the podcast.

Matt, great that you are keeping your role as moderator and in these podcasts, your enthusiasm is contagious. Best of lucks in your other ventures.

Looks like the big names did show up:

Can someone provide feedback on the following? Thanks!

俄罗斯打扫了女子单人的牌!但是,中国赢了女子双人的铜牌。

é luō sī dǎ sǎo le nǚ zi dān rén de pái! dàn shì, zhōng guó yíng le nǚ zi shuāng rén de tóng pái。

Russia swept the women's singles medals! However, China won the bronze medal in the women's doubles.

你好 Lily, welcome to Chinese Pod, you will love it here!

jet lag - shíchā - 时差

Beijing (China) Standard Time - Běijīng Shíjiān - 北京时间

Things get pretty interesting when one is trying to set up a meeting between people that live in a country that does observe daylight saving time like 美国 (Měi guó - USA) and people in 中国 (Zhōng guó - China). At any given time, is 加州 (Jiā Zhōu - California) 15 or 16 hours behind BST?? I can never remember! There are 4 time zones in the 美国大陆 (Měi guó dà lù - US mainland or Continental United States). Is Central Standard Time 1 or 2 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time? How about Mountain Standard Time? 别问我了!(Bié wèn wǒ le! - Don't ask me!)

Oh yeah, and the state of Arizona? Just like 中国: 没有夏令时 (see Lily's example above).

Other uses of 接 (jiē):

catch/return the ball (sports): 接球(jiē qiú)

accept/receive: 接受 (jiē shòu)

http://chinesepod.com/resources/glossary/entry/接

http://chinesepod.com/resources/glossary/entry/接受

A question, do we use 接 (jiē) if we are talking about picking up a coat at the dry cleaner?

我来接我的外套。(Wǒ lái jiē wǒ de wàitào)

How about picking up food we ordered by phone, also jiē?

Thank you.

Hi, great lesson and comments here.

How about:即便? (jǐbiàn)

http://chinesepod.com/resources/glossary/entry/即便

How does it compare in frequency of use and degree of formality with the other three?

Connie, can you post the first sentence you spoke in the dialogue? You said something like "the difference between the three is in degree of formality". I did not catch the words for "formal" and "informal". Thanks!

To make things even more interesting, the characters for bian4 (便), and shi3 (使) are almost identical.

ChinesePod, very useful lesson. On the second line of the dialogue it should be shénmeyàng.

light487, very handy phrase! :)

If the taxi is in the left lane and I know a right turn is coming soon, can I say:

师傅,右转来了 (Shīfu, yòuzhuǎn lái le)

to let him know he needs to change lanes soon? Thanks!
