I was a social worker 社会工作者 in a former life and when I tell my Chinese friends this, they usually respond with, "你真善良！“ （ni zhen shan liang/ you are very giving) and when I ask why, the response was, "因为你自愿了”（yin wei ni zi yuan le/ because you volunteered.) Of course I had to tell them that social workers were not volunteers back home and were paid, though it often seemed as the pay was close to 'volunteer pay.'

Glad to hear its growing in China. I had to usually go through a lengthy discussion starting with '比如。。‘ (bi ru, for example) to create a situation and what I was expected to do and my responsibilities.

I hope that China's history of extended family living together (stronger support system) and the confusing world of 'face' (actually may benefit families from time to time as in 'a crime' or inappropriate act isn't just a reflection upon oneself, but the entire family) may decrease the need that we have back home - and, yes, trying to be optimistic - after being a social worker, you forget how to spell the word.

去年在上海市我参加过一场自行车比赛。当天一辆摩托车被我撞到了。完全是我的错。我的膝盖都受了伤，伤口出血了，轮胎都有点弯曲了，刹车破坏了。Only a few bits of plastic broke off the front of his motorbike. He said we must call the police. I wanted to finish the race, albeit on a much slower bike. I pulled out 270rmb and said it was all I had. 私了了。He yelled at me to be more careful and I whole heartedly took his advice as the accident really scared the crap out of me. And still managed to finish the race in the top 20% - oh well, there's always next year!

我爱私了！

During Chinese New Year I jokingly told one of my friend's children '慢慢放‘ - 意思就是，’放鞭炮该注意安全。‘ 那个小孩儿的朋友问她， “慢慢放是什么意思？” 那个小女儿回答，“他是老外所以他不知道我们没说 ‘慢慢放’ 但是他就知道 ‘慢慢走’ 所以 慢慢放的意思是 注意安全‘ - 她们很搞笑。

几年以前我跟我最好的朋友从我老家，克利夫兰市，开一辆卡车到拉斯维加斯市。到那边的时候我们都说：“一赌博一次，然后就跑去！”（因为觉得都是赌鬼。）但是赌了一次后，服务员轻轻地问，“要给你喝什么？” 突然我听我自己说，“一杯威士忌，好吧。”

Years back, a best friend and I drove from my hometown of Cleveland to Las Vegas by truck. When we arrived, we said to one another: "One time, and than we run." (We both like gambling a bit too much.) But after one bet, the waitress offered a drink. I heard myself say, "A glass of whiskey."

没想到十二个小时能飞过去了那么快。先在二十一点桌子，赢了！然后在轮盘赌桌子，赢了！最后在骰（craps?)桌掷骰子。。。终于我才发现了我又掷了一次太多（rolled one time too many?)。。。口袋里连一个硬币也没有。

那天晚上我朋友在车子上睡觉，我在一条没用过了的小马路上睡觉。好可怜啊！

但是，要说在那些十二个小时里是非常好玩，永远忘不了啊！
