Rúguǒ "yǎnghuó"zhǐ dàibiǎo zuìjīběn de tiáojiàn, wǒmen yīnggāi yòng shénme cí lái biǎodá bǐjiào gāo de qǐngkuàng?
To do well, or even really well, for one's self as opposed to simply keeping body and soul together?

October 16, 2008, 01:43 PMPete's right, you can't visit Rome without falling in love with it. I was there again last March and never wanted to leave. (Although long-term I'd probably stay in the country and do short city trips.)
Jenny, I saw Roman Holiday for the first time after I got back--and it's definitely a blockbuster in my book, newly released or not.
This trip I skipped the coliseum/Colosseum for a chance to eat lunch in a Roman elementary school. The seats were a little small, but the food was great. Rome's the first major city in the world (I'm pretty sure) to go to almost 100% organic food in their public schools--and they cook from scratch every day. Quite a contrast with the U.S.
How about a "Saved by the Gong" during lunch period!
How do you say "cook from scratch" (meaning to start with separate ingredients and whole foods instead of opening cans and boxes of processed foods) in Chinese? Has hyper-processed food been around long enough for such a phrase to have developed?

September 03, 2008, 11:59 PMI know this has been asked elsewhere, but I'm not sure it's been answered, and I find it's in this lesson's expansion section:
I always thought: 他几岁？ How old is he?
was used only for children you think are under 10 (or 10 and under?).
But here the answer is: 差不多二十五岁。About 25.
So he could hardly be mistaken for a small child.
Could an expert please weigh in?

Great conversation - and lesson. Looks like we all want to know what frequency chart Henning uses.
I'm also really enjoying the expansion exercises and had a question about this sentence and the English translation:
别亲我，小心我把感冒传染给你。
Bié qīn wǒ, xiǎoxín wǒ bǎ gǎnmào chuánrǎn gěi nǐ.
Don't kiss me--I don't want to give you my flu.
I wonder if it would be equally correct to replace the the 小心 with a more active 我不要 or 不想 or even 怕. Or would these sound funny?
别亲我，我不要把感冒传染给你。
Bié qīn wǒ, wǒ búyào bǎ gǎnmào chuánrǎn gěi nǐ.

February 18, 2008, 11:53 PMI thought it was a pretty good lesson, and enjoyed the vocab. Guess I'm one of those crazy Americans holding out for the ideal over what may appear to be reality. John, to get past the S&M conversation I'd suggest that the "opposite" of either masochistic or sadistic would be emotionally well-adjusted [not to imply that SMers are necessarily maladjusted!]. So, how do you you say well-adjusted in Chinese?
