I have a question concerning the use of the characters for "other".

When I first started learning, my teacher introduced: 其它 qi2ta1 as the default expression for other. At the market two days ago I asked a merchant:  有没有其它的颜色吗？(you3 mei2 you3 qi2ta1de yan2se4 ma?) She understood what I said and explained they only had 1 color. In what cases should 别的 bie2de be used or are they essentially interchangeable?

Wow, John. You are an immeasurably better teacher than your predecessor Ken. I deeply appreciate your un-pretentious approach to explaining the material without using the lesson as a platform to display your knowledge in Mandarin. 

Great work, the literal word by word translations are really helpful and your voice has a certain educational tone to it. In stark contrast to the obvious narcissism and self-flattery that is so characteristic of Ken's voice.
