Posted on: Making the Move from China
February 18, 2014 at 4:13 AMI was in Shanghai over CNY - seemed like there was a lot of 中国之梦 around - I think it's being used to advertise beer - and probably other things too.
About the n/ng business. If this was a beginner level, or elementary level lesson, I think the presenters would have to be more careful about their prononciation.
But at Upper Intermediate, we just have to know - lots of Chinese don't clearly distinguish between the final n/ng. It's not their problem. It's reality. If there is any doubt in our mind, we can check the pinyin on the vocab. list. No big deal.

November 27, 2013 at 1:21 AMseems that depending on the context 酒鬼 can be translated as : alcoholic, connoisseur or 'pisshead'.
Posted on: Visit to a Temple (Part 2)
November 11, 2013 at 8:31 AMor perhaps something about the people in the temple - what they are all up to. The different kinds of 算命 that are going on ... throwing sticks out of a pot and those crescent shaped things they throw onto the floor. I've seen that so many times, but don't know how to say it. And the different kinds of 拜拜 . Lighting the incense sticks.. and which type to buy - those little kiosks sell all sorts of interesting slips of paper - but which one to get??? I always enjoy the hubbub and bustle in a Chinese temple.

September 24, 2013 at 7:32 AMSorry to nitpick - but if those things are 小小的和白白的 they are the eggs, - the 'nits'. In fact the white ones are the egg shells - the baby lice have already hatched out. The actual head lice are little brown things that look like flies.
虱子 to me implies the insect, but perhaps in Chinese no distinction is made between the insect and the egg?
Washing her hair isn't going to do any good - she needs to get a 'nitty gritty' comb.
If I sound obsessed with this subject, let's just say we've had two fairly recent outbreaks in our household...

September 13, 2013 at 1:45 PMThanks Connie!
I had to look up the 新四大天王 I'm afraid I only recognize 周杰伦... The others look like they should still be in high school...

September 13, 2013 at 2:17 AMSo are the 四大天王 exactly the same as the 四大金剛? When you go into the temple there's often those big scary guys - mentioned in the dialogue, often you've got the one holding a pipa and another a sword - I always thought they were the 四大天王?
Also VERY importantly... the 四大天王 can also refer to the 4 big stars of Canto pop: Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok, Andy Lau and Leon Lai...

August 27, 2013 at 11:55 AMIs that true that most students of Chinese as a second language are male? Seems a bit odd, I think I know an equal mix of male & female students.
