Posted on: The Preposition 于(yu)
June 2, 2012 at 4:45 AMIt is always this simple, swiss-army-knife words, like 于, that are so hard to learn. I hope someone can pontificate on what meaning the 于 in 在于 contributes to the word. Thanks.
Posted on: The Tea Scam
May 31, 2012 at 2:38 AMI ran into this in Beijing, very near the forbidden palace. The end result was that I paid less than was asked for the tea, but a bit more than was reasonable, walked, and two blocks down the street knew what the next young lady who wanted to have tea with me was up to.
Posted on: 上海法租界
May 28, 2012 at 5:15 PM我猜上海是以它的地位和羊腔羊调命名的。在上海的时候我遇到过了异国风情的地区,不过我不确定哪些位法租界,哪些位于某某租界,或者就是上海特殊的地方。总之,有地方堪比欧洲的城市,幽情和小资情调都很像。反而东方明珠看起来是异界风情的,有可能是外星人租界。

Posted on: Please Speak Mandarin!
May 24, 2012 at 4:18 AMThe sentence in the dialog means, "Are you willing to speak Mandarin?", as you guessed. If you want to ask about someone's ability to speak Mandarin: 你会说普通话吗?

May 24, 2012 at 2:07 AMFinding myself in a situation where people around me were speaking Chinese and not caring that I was left out, was my initial impetus to start learning Chinese. Before that, people had always accommodated me by speaking English, and I hadn't had any incentive to learn a foreign language.

Posted on: The Snail Maiden
May 17, 2012 at 2:05 AMDon't let the American right hear about this. I don't want to see a bunch of ballet initiatives forbidding the mariage of people to snails.
