@xemrac hehe, yeah I and my friends/cousins are quite the same these days, although I'll still wait for older ladies to start first, and if I am the host I'll start last just because I'm making sure everything is right for my guests. :) What part of China are the previous generations of your family from (I'm interested from a culinary perspective)

As a child growing up, my father instilled in me that when about to eat I should first wait for the ladies at the table to start first, then those older than me, before I could finally dig in (not an easy task for a ravenous eater like myself). If I were to ask them to start first, it would have been considered to be rude. I guess in China it's more polite to ask others to start first, and when leaving the table one doesn't have to excuse one's self, but one should invite others to continue eating.

@bababardwan Saw that movie when it came out - was quite good. I am not worried at all about my health check - it's just a drag. But thanks :D

@rjberki I second your comment. I've jumped into taxis before and told them to head to Zhongshan Park (every cab driver knows this place), only to be met with blank stares. Then I elaborate - Zhonshan Park, Changning Rd, Cloud 9 Shopping Mall - then I tell them that I know they know where it is, if they still want to play that game I look at their little cab card and read their name out to them (only ever had to do that once). Depending on the time of day, but if it's late at night, the aforementioned only happens when the cabbie doesn't want to go in my direction due to the lack of clubs etc in the area I live in.

FYI  外科 wàikē usually translates as external medicine and 内科 nèikē as internal medicine. Basically, 外科 means the surgical department whereas 内科/the internal medicine department involves using medicinese to treat illness - more like a G.P (General Practitioner) department.

Anyone care to mention the names of the various other departments in Chinese hospitals?

BTW I have to go and get my 体检 (tǐjiǎn) health check in about a month...fun stuff.

I hear that due to its elevation, Mexico ciy can be quite cool at times, even on a summer night.

Would love to go there and sample the various chillies on offer.

@Maureen I also concur that 马琳 is quite an authentic Chinese name. :)

I wonder if when horse racing and betting gains more traction in China, if there'll be an unofficial public holiday like the Melbourne Cup Day in Australia...
