Is there a better translation for 凉皮? Several years ago when I first got here I had studied numerous characters. I was riding my bike outside and saw 凉皮 written on a sign and thought, "People here commonly eat cold skin???". Now I know it seems to describe the flat and wide shape of the noodle rather.
Let's look at the following two examples.
冷面
This could also be more literally translated as cold noodles, but I think it's more referring to 朝鲜冷面.
炒凉皮
I actually prefer this fried hot rendition to the regular. If we follow the same rule translating this one it becomes fired cold noodles, which is a bit of a contradiction.
I'm not up on my noodleology, but I've always been curious if there is a better way to express the meaning beyond using cold noodles. Is it just the shape and way it's cut or is the noodle actually made in a special way?
