Why is there such a fascination with giving meanings to numbers in China I wonder? My favourite has to be 419 = one night stand -- partly it makes sense in English but not Chinese ("For one night") You can definitely connect to the Chinese QQ servers from outside of China. To sign up for a QQ number you have to be able to read Chinese -- the anti fraud system requires you to retype pictures of Chinese characters to check that you are a real person. They tended to be fairly simple characters though so it's not totally impossible for us foreigners. Much better than QQ is Tencent Messenger, now finally available in English as well. It uses the same network as QQ but has a more "business like" interface. I still have vastly more business contacts using QQ than I do MSN, although the number of MSN users is definitely growing. One thing in QQ's favour is that it's noticeably faster to transfer files than it is by MSN.
