I'm also wondering how much success 聋哑人 have lipreading 普通话。。particularly if they have any success in distinguishing tones. Anyone know?

Search Chinese Forums. You'll find some posts on that topic under my Chinese name Meng Lelan.

I never dreamed that I would see a lesson on Chinese Sign Language on ChinesePod. Amazing. By the way, the safety instruction video that China Eastern shows on the plane during take off, notice the stewardess in it uses sign language to welcome the passengers. That was unthinkable 20 years ago.

There are very few assistive devices available to those who are blind, in China. Learning to use a white cane to navigate streets, use braille devices for writing, and to use seeing eye dogs requires lengthy training and trained teachers. Career training for the blind is extremely limited as well. They are traditionally placed in careers involving massage and music.
