Do searches on topics that you are interested, or have to use in your daily life. Do those lessons even if they are out of your 'placement test' indicated level.
Also, a placement test is test that someone has designed to try to work out what level you are at. No placement test is perfect.
Making use and applying your Chinese is what will make it stick. By focusing on what you will need to say, your own topics and interests will make it much more immediate and you will feel more ownership of the material.
Do you have someone you could 'teach' Chinese too? Even if it is your cat. Having someone that you then have to share what you have learnt with will make your studying more purposeful and you more accountable for your studying.
