July 6, 2010 at 12:56 PMThe thing that I notice about organic versus "conventional" vegetables and fruits is taste. Organic produce is tastier. In addition, the lack of pesticides and herbicides in organically grown produce should not be overlooked. Along with fertilizers, those affect water quality and the food chain very negatively. But selfish creatures that we are, the important thing to keep in mind is TASTE!

May 19, 2010 at 1:53 PMI remember making lots of friends by having a bag of nice french roast when I was in China in '88. There was no coffee to be found there back then as far as I could tell.

March 5, 2010 at 9:19 PMDoes anyone else feel like there's a rather huge gap between intermediate and upper intermediate lessons? not to bitch... the intermediate lessons are too easy, the uppers are quite tricky... I suppose it's reasonable to just bounce between the two... but I thought I'd mention my experience.

February 16, 2010 at 7:18 AMI have definitely seen racism in China... surprise surprise... probably no worse than other places I've been, though. There was an interesting article last year about black Africans who live down in Guangzhou and environs in the NY Times last year... seemed like they were very marginalized/isolated.

February 16, 2010 at 6:53 AMShucks... I just got back into Chinese Pod only to find out I need to find some way to let someone know they need to go and buy me some red underpants. This will be a neat trick...

July 9, 2010 at 3:49 PMIf you feel that the crowds are too many, try going in the winter. Some of the pathways, especially to the highest peak become mind-bogglingly treacherous, and things being what they are in China, there is no signage to not just head right up the ice-covered steps, but crowds are no problem in February based on my experience. The "sea of clouds" effects are also absolutely blow away when there is snow on the mountain--mystical place.
