So why does 二百五 mean "stupid" ? At first I thought what Greg thought ; that "er-bai-wu" isn't correct, but then the other teachers said that there's nothing wrong with saying "er-bai", so now I can't think of any other reason why "er-bai-wu" should mean "stupid"
My other question is about the Chinese word for "tacky" (俗气)。This word has the character 俗(su4) in it, which generally means "customs/traditions" . I can't help but wonder if this word originated from the idea that some customs and traditions are "tacky" ? Can anyone share the origin/ etymology of this word ?
