I was walking alone in China one day earlier this year and heard an elderly woman call out 老外。Knowing she was referring to me, I greeted her and we had a small chat. She invited me to tea later in the week to meet one of her students from long ago who knew some English...long story short, we all still keep in touch today. So seeing how she was using it without bad intent, it doesn't make sense to me to let the words make us too uncomfortable. We all habe citizenship from one nation or another and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging it.
