What happens if you don't put 了 at the end? Is it wrong? If it's not, how would the sentences differ (with and without 了)?

(For example in the dialogue 那么远, nàme yuǎn, that's so far!)
Or are there different situations where you use 那么 nàme or 这么 zhème ?
